Vermont's nickname, "The Green Mountain State" came about when Vermont was first discovered by French Explorer Samuel De Champlain. Champlain First laid eyes on Vermont in the spring time and was struck by the expansive green mountains. Because of this, Champlain renamed the territory as Montagnes Vertes french for Green Mountains. Later in Vermont's history, other English speaking settlers begain migrating to the reagion and the name ended up being changed to Ver (green) Mont (mountain) or Vermont. In paying tribute to the French explorere, both Lake Champlain and Vermont - The Green Mountain State, held names given by and for Samuel De Champlain.
