∙ 15y agoAt the beginning of the Civil War the State of Virginia voted to secede from the Union, but many of the the people in what is now West Virginia were loyal to the Union and did not want to join the Confederacy, so they split off from the rest of Virginia and they officially became a state on June 20, 1863.

∙ 14y agoTo make a very long and convoluted story short, West Virginia seceded from Virginia after Virginia seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy. Having done so they petitioned for Statehood and Lincoln granted it despite it being Uncostitutional.
