During the Second World War, Neville Chamberlain, the preceding Prime Minister, resigned. Winston Churchill, already a political figure of some importance, rose to become the Prime Minister. He led the forces and helped win the Second World War. At the conclusion of the war he lost the 1945 election and became the Opposition Minister. haha
Many might have thought Churchills' political career was over by the time he actually became Prime Minister of the UK in 1940. He had already been Home Secretary & Chancellor of the Exchequer (Interior minister & Finance minister respectively) in times past, long times past, & the results were not always glowing. However he was respected as an opponent of Naziism & was seen as anti-appeasement. But there was much discord within the Conservative Party in UK, and the opposition was weak, the Liberals, post LLoyd-George in decline & Labour yet to establish itself credibly in government. And so, by the time Britain goes to war in 1939 Churchill is an old man. Norway is a disaster for the British forces, unable to stop the German invasion, which took place to prevent British intervention. There is a vote of confidence called in Parliament & Neville Chamberlain is defeated. He resigns. Churchill become PM of an all party government on May 10 1940, coincidentally the same day as the Germans invade the Low Countries & France.
Winston Churchill became the Prime Minister when King George appointed him to be the Prime Minister of the temporary Parliment of the Wartime.
