The boys are part of an evacuation program similar to the one that sent the younger generation of young men and women out of the country or to the countryside. This was to prevent an entire generation from dying when the Germans bombed them.

The key link is that the novel illustrates how thin the veneer of civilization is.

The story takes place just after the Atomic Bomb is dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end WWII.

___

Obviously, the evacuation concept in the novel is based on what happened in some countries, such as Britain, in World War 2. There was no evacuation in any Allied country following the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945. The war hinted at in the novel is clearly some imaginary, future war.

___

It was never stated why the boys were in the plane, but the novel took place after World War 2. It takes place during the beginning years of the Cold War (late 1940s, or early 1950s). Somewhere in the novel, Golding states something about an atom bomb being dropped prior to the boy's arrival on the island. So this means that World War 2 ended.

I believe William Golding wrote this book in reference to the Cold war. During the Cold War many people, around the world, thought that the Cold War would turn into another World War.

Both "Lord of the Flies" and the Cold War explore themes of power, fear, and the breakdown of civilization. In "Lord of the Flies," a group of boys stranded on an island descends into chaos and violence, similar to the fear of nuclear annihilation during the Cold War. Both highlight how human nature and societal structures can unravel under pressures of conflict and power struggles.

This is my interpretation but essentially the Cold War is a struggle between two super power ideologies - Communism and Democracy (Capitalism) - a major factor that plays into these ideologies is the economic system but seeing as there is no economy on the island then this has little relevance.

However, in terms of ideological presentation it is clearly linked - and isn't surprising considering, socio-historically, this book was written and received in the heart of the cold war.

In terms of symbolism within the novel Ralph, Piggy and Simon are three main characters whom represent this democracy - democracy is set up on the island from the beginning and is partly represented by the conch shell (which, when later destroyed, spells the end of democracy on the Island) - the other ideology represented on the island is a very dictatorial (not too dissimilar from a communist Stalinist leadership, very much enforcing terror) lead by Jack and in some ways the evil human nature of Roger.

At the time of writing a very western view was that the Communist east in Russia was spreading out - trying to spread communism across the world - in doing so it forced its influence over much of Easter Europe which became the Eastern Bloc - it could be interpreted that the deaths of Simon and Piggy are the different societies falling to communism.

Another part of the Cold War was the threat of nuclear destruction of the world - a theme that can also be seen in the novel, represented by fire, the very thing that they pin their hopes of survival on, is the same thing that ultimately destroys the island at the end of the novel (a similar notion is implied by the use/ or disuse, as the case may be, of nuclear weaponry in the Cold War).

Lord of the Flies takes place just after the Atom Bomb is dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The children crash on the island just after World War II ends. Alternative answer: The time frame of Lord of the Flies is never mention in the novel. There are references to a war, the "bomb" and "the reds," which would lead the reader to asume some unspecified future atomic was being waged against communism. As World War II was a war against Facism, in which the communist USSR was on the side of the Allies, the war refered to in the novel is obviously not World War II.

The Lord of the Flies in a physical sense is the head of the sow that Jack's tribe puts on a stick sharpened at each end. But, as Simon discovers before he's murdered, the Lord of the Flies isn't a physical object itself, but a part of human nature inside each person. In a nutshell, the Lord of the Flies is the inner hunter each person has within them. Their inner savage and blood lust, which is the feeling Jack embodies in the novel.

There have been many types of insane persecutions, witch hunts, genocides, and assorted insanity throughout human history. But it was the Holocaust above all, which showed that however civilized people may seem to be, there is a monstrous capacity for barbarism and cruelty, just under the surface, waiting to emerge. Germany at the time of the Holocaust had been literally the most advanced nation on Earth, famed for its accomplishments in the arts, sciences, technology, philosophy, etc. Yet it descended effortlessly into the deepest insanity the world has known. We now know that civilization, for all its apparent power, remains a veneer, underneath which lies primitive man.

World War II is the reason the boys are on the island. They were evacuated on a plane due to the threat of the atom bomb. The plane then crashed leaving them stranded on the island.

What was the setting time in lord of the flies?

Just after the Atomic Bomb was dropped on Japan The period in which Lord of the Flies takes places is not mentioned in the book.
