there was traing going on in west dapto the army had positions from near north beach to flag staff hill and a base at hill 60 at port kembla for the protection of the port kembla steel works, at one stage a japanese recon sub came into the harbor at port kembla. the steel works was producing steel for the war effort as well as making one of the main wepons used by aussie soldiers at the time the owen gun, also during the WW2 era two fatal accidents happened in the region involving defence personel in rescue effoft after a us merchant navy ship the city service Boston run aground near shellhabour with Australian soldier assisting with rescue efforts to save the men on board a number of soldiers were killed. also a RAAFhudson bomber crashed into bong bong mountain at dapto killing all on board.
