While the line was still far from Berlin at the war's end, the brutal war had cost Germany over 6,000,000 casualties, so Germany moved for peace negotiations. Once Germany had capitulated, the remaining Central Powers followed suit.
It's important not to confuse this with WWII, which ended with the dropping of the atomic bomb.
