Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California and later moved to Arroyo Grande, California. His father, David Efron, is an engineer at a power plant, and his mother, Starla Baskett, is a former secretary who worked at the same power plant as Efron's father.[5][6] Although of Jewish ancestry, Efron was raised agnostic and has never been religious.[7][8] Efron had a self-described "normal childhood" in a middle class family,[1] and has a younger brother, Dylan. Zac Efron started to act when he was 11 years old. His parents found out that he could sing well and they sent him for singing lessons.

Actually, he started off in community theater in the San Luis Obispo area. His middle school drama teacher thought he could make it professionally and connected him with a Hollywood agent. He won small parts in several TV shows, then a recurring role in the series Summerland. He played the lead role in a movie for the first time at age 16 (The Derby Stallion). Then came the High School Musical franchise with Disney, and the rest is history.
