The Zionists were the ones who led the creation of the State of Israel. Without them, there would be no Jewish State. It was their idea and their actions that brought the state into existence and sustained it throughout the years.

Answer 1

For many centuries, Jews had wanted a homeland, especially when prejudice against them was strongest. Historically, certain denominations of Christians (especially Catholics and Russian Orthodox) persecuted or discriminated against Jews, and in some cases, even forced them to convert to Christianity or die. In the mid-to-late 1800s, talk of a Jewish homeland began to emerge among certain Jewish leaders, and when conditions for Jews in Europe and in Russia worsened in the early 1900s, the desire for a Jewish homeland increased.

During World War II, the murder of 6 million European Jews, in what came to be known as the Holocaust, made many Jewish people even more determined to have a homeland. Zionism, the belief that Jews should in fact have a nation of their own, led to the creation of the state of Israel, which many Jews believed was the Biblical land from which the Jews were sent into exile thousands of years ago. Thus, the founding of Israel in 1948 fulfilled the Zionist dream of a return to the ancestral home, as well creating as a country where Jews, many of whom were escaping persecution, could live and be safe.

Answer 2

Zionism, both religious and secular, calls for the return of Jews to their ancestral land. The land in question is the modern state of Israel.

It probably made some Jews even more determined than ever to establishe a state of their own. In addition to the Holocaust, there were violent antisemtic riots in Poland after the Holocaust. For many survivors in Poland, this was simply the last straw.

However, the widespread myth that the guilt-ridden Allies 'donated' Israel to the Jews as some kind of consolation for the Holocaust is nonsense. Israel had been part of the British Mandate of Palestine since the end of World War 1. Since 1920 there had been fighting there between Jews and Arabs, and the British were unable to cope ... Their mandate to rule the area was running out - and they got out.

Zionism defined the parameters, desires, goals, aspirations, and logistics that underpin the State of Israel.

A similar question would be "How did American Patriotism help to create the USA?"

In terms of actual contributions of particular Zionists:

The State of Israel came together as the result of Jewish Immigration to the British Mandate of Palestine, Zionist leadership, Jewish militias and political and financial support from Zionists in the West (primarily Jewish philanthropists, but some Christians also). The first group are called the Halutzim or the Pioneers and they took it upon themselves to modernize Israel by cultivating the land and using European technology to improve its output and productivity. The Zionist leadership included some like Theodor Herzl, who envisioned the state, to Eliezer ben Yehuda, who developed Modern Hebrew as a functional language, to David Ben Gurion who declared Israel's independence and sovereignty, among many others. There were numerous Jewish militias defending the Halutzim and attacking the British (and eventually the Arabs when conflict started) such as the Palmach, the Haganah, and the Irgun. Finally, without the monetary contributions from families like the Rothschilds, there would have been no way for the nascent pre-governmental and governmental organizations to acquire enough capital to maintain an internal infrastructure.

Without Zionism, the State of Israel would never be created. Zionism is the patriotic movement among Jews to create a Jewish Homeland in the historic Land of Israel. This was the movement that established the State of Israel.

Zionism as a modern phenomenon was a development by Enlightened Jews (Maskilim -- משכלים) hybridizing the concept of the ethnonationalist European nationalism with the religious concepts of a Jewish people (Am Yisrael -- עם ישראל) and the Ingathering of the Exiles (Kibutz Galuyot -- קבוץ גליות). Leaders in the movement like Theodor Herzl and Ahad Ha'am showed the merger of these movements when discussing their own motivations.
