The fax machine has effected so many lives, because a document can now arrive in less than a couple of minutes, instead of a couple days by mail. Faxing keeps us more organized and its cost is less than mailing a document overnight.

The biggest advantages I can think of is near immediate delivery of information from one source to another. No postage charges. And logged confirmation of the reception of said document. In two way communications, its really useful, because by snail mail something would probably at least take 1-2 days to arrive. Now you can send something to someone, they can get it in a few minutes, they can review/edit/sign it, fax it right back to you. Prior to e-mail becoming so popular, a lot of parents also use to buy their college kids a fax to help keep in touch with them and not have to pay exorbitant long distance rates incurred by phone conversations.

With internet faxing as the latest technological advancement business/personal communication has leaped into the next level. It provides mobility, security, cost-effective way of sending/receiving facsimiles.
Faxing offers a quick and easy transmission of copy or image of documents. Internet fax technology even let you access online fax service anytime as long as you have a device connected to the internet.

The fax machine was invented in the mid-19th Century by Alexander Bain. It was not of much use until the invention of radio, when it became a useful means of transmitting written messages or pictures between places not linked by telegraph systems. It came into its own during World War I for use by the military.

A service that was a variation of the fax machine has been in existance between France and Lyons since around the time the US Civil War was ending - more than a decade before the telephone was invented.

From then until the mid 1960s, there were variations of the service in existance that were used to send and receive everything from military maps to signatures for identification purposes.

In the mid 1960s, a version of the "modern" fax machine was put into place, with Xerox inventing what would be considered close to today's fax machine.

From then until the late 1990s / early 2000s, the fax machine was a cornerstone of business and beurocratic communication, being able to send and receive documents much faster than regular mail or courier.

At that point, email became a more dominant form of written communication.

Today, faxing is still popular in business and beurocratic circles for a number of reasons, primarily because of its ability to issue a confirmation page (proof that the electronic message was received by the other fax machine) as well as at times being a quicker method of transmitting printed information than scanning and emailing a document.
