Water was definitely important because it was a source of food, a mode of transportation and protection from outsiders. Also, mountains provided a barrier/protection. In ancient China, the mountainous terrain allowed seasonal monsoons which caused the Chinese to adapt and change their methods of farming and the location of their homes. Also (and I learned this just this morning) the constant volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes on the islands of (ancient) Japan influenced thier religion, Shintoism since the Japanese had a deep belief that all natural objects (rocks and trees and stuff) have spirit and when they are destroyed by natural disasters like volcanoes and tsunamis they believe the spirits are angry. -6th grade genius
