That is a beautiful story.

As you probably know, Omar was one of the enemies of Islam in the early days in Mecca. Omar was a proud, strong young man. He was fiercly loyal to his people, and he saw that Muhammad was causing dissent and strife among them. He hated that, though he did not yet understand the message of Muhammad (peace be upon him). little did he know that the Prophet made a prayer to Allah, saying: "Oh Allah, strengthen Islam by Omar, or Abu Lahab". That meant he was asking Allah to guide either Omar or Abu Lahab.

One day Omar was thinking about all the conflict that Muhammad's message was causing in Mecca and he became fed-up. He decided, right then and there, that he was going to go on his own and kill the Prophet (peace be upon him). He took up his sword and headed to the place that he thought he would find him. With anger in his demeanor, and walking with strength, Omar passed a man who was a Muslim, but had not told people that he was. When the man saw Omar in a clearly angered state, he immediately thought of the Prophet and was concerned for him. "Oh Omar", the man said, "where are you going?". Omar said something to the effect that he was going to go and rid Mecca of the problem. The secret Muslim didn't know what to do. He did not want to make trouble for Omar's sister - who was also secretly a Muslim - but he figured that if he could divert Omar away from the Prophet long enough, he could go and warn him (peace be upon Muhammad). "Well", he then said to Omar, "Maybe you should take care of your own house first". Omar stopped and turned to look at the man. After a few moments, Omar realised that his sister was a Muslim. So, instead of heading to the Prophet, Omar diverted his path and went straight to his sister's house instead.

When Omar reached the door of his sister's house he could hear the faint recitation of the Qur'an inside. His sister had a teacher there who would come and instruct them in the Qur'an. When Omar banged on the door, the teacher, being fearful of Omar, hid himself in a corner of the room. Omar entered, very angry, and demanded to know from his siter what it was that he had just heard from outside. Having their cover blown, as it were, Omar's sister bravely declared to him that yes, it was the Qur'an that he had heard. She also told him that she had entered the religion of God and had become a Muslim.

So shocked and angered was Omar by this news that he struck his sister on the face. The blow he gave her was strong enough to cause her to bleed. When Omar saw that he had injured his sister, whom he loved, he was saddened. From his sadness and shame, Omar then calmed down. His anger left him. Beacuse of his pity for his beloved sister, Omar then asked he if he could please read what it is that they were reciting from the Qur'an. Omar's sister told him that he could, but before he would be given some of the Qur'an to hold in his hands, he must first bathe himself clean. After Omar took a bath, he came out to read. The verses they had been reciting were the first verses of Surat Ta Haa. Omar read: "Ta Haa. Maa Anzalnaa Alayk Al Qur'ana Li Tashqaa . . ."

As soon as Omar began to read these miraculous words of God, his eyes began to fill with tears - for he recognized them as a marvel, which could only come from the Creator of the Universe. Omar's heart was guided - in fulfillment of the prayer of the Prophet to Allah.

Having now believed, Omar set out once more in the direction of the house of Al Arkam, the place where the Prophet would often meet the Muslims when they were still in Mecca. This time, however, Omar's intention was not to kill him.

As Omar approached the house, two of the companions were at the door, looking out. They saw Omar approach, but they did not know why he was approaching. They decided to be on their guard, just in case he came to fight. Yet when they announced to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that here was Omar Ibn Al Khattab coming to us, the Prophet, as if he already knew, told them to welcome him in. When they did, Omar came to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and said: "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that you are the Messenger of Allah".

The companions who were present were astounded at this sudden change. Omar had been one of the harshest enemies of the truth; and now he comes to declare his faith in Allah. "Allahu Akbar" they shouted. Then Omar, in typical Omar fashion, said to the Prophet: "Oh Messenger of Allah . . . is it not that we are on the truth, and they (the idolaters) are on falsehood?". The Prophet acknowledged. "Then why" said Omar, "Should we hide?"

Such was the conversion of Omar Ibn Al Khattab, the second Khalif of the Muslim Ummah. May Allah be pleased with him, and all of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
