Hypatia of Alexandria was the last of the great Greek philosophers of antiquity. The daughter of Theon the mathematician, she far surpassed her father, becoming the greatest philosopher of her time. She suffered a cruel death. In the year 415 AD, as she was returning home, she was dragged from her carriage by a Christian mob. She was taken to a church called Caesareum, stripped naked, and had her flesh torn apart by oyster shells. They took her mangled body to a place called Cinaron and burnt her.
The local Bishop of Alexandria was disturbed by the philosophy that Hypatia was expressing in the circles where she was privy to, as it was totally devoid of any religion of the times, and she was adamant that religion was not a valid consideration in the lives of people of her time. She expressed openly that men should cast off this yoke and be happy to be rid of the disconsolate things that religion fostered in the people of her time and place. For this her assassination was planed and paid for by the Bishop of Alexandria. She was attacked on the street and brought down by multiple stab wounds. Being atheist and female her passing was not appreciated until her story was related centuries later in the "age of enlightenment" around the 17th century.
