Poles may have been amang the first Euroreans ever to journey to the New World they sailed with the Viking ships in the 11 th century also a few Poles made the transatlantic journey with Christopher Columbus in 1492 and the German ship Mary and Margaret(1608)Today ,the 8 million people in the United States who claim Polish ancestry represents one of the nation's largers ethnic groups.
Polish people started to emigrate to the United States in large numbers in the 19th. century. Many Polish Jews were prompted to move to the USA in search of freedom from persecution by Czarist Russians and Catholic Poles. Many non-jewish Poles emigrated in search of freedom from Czarist political oppression. Many others emigrated simply to find economic opportunity and a "better" life.
Most of Polish immigrants settled in New York and Chicago. But you can find them also in many other regions of US: Philadelphia, MIlwaukee, Los Angeles, Buffalo, Phoenix, etc. There are also some cities named by them: Warsaw, IN; Czestochowa, PA; Pulaski, WI; etc.
Many have arrived by boat or ship, but others were able to catch a flight.
