Henry made the break with Rome by persuading the parliament that they would have more power if they let him do it. The parliament agreed and enforced the 'Act of Supremacy'. This meant that Henry was the official/superior leader of the Church of England. Hope this helps :)

Henry VIII wanted a divorce from Anne Boleyn. The Pope wouldn't do it, so Henry got Thomas Cranmer to grant an annulment. In return, the Pope excommunicated Henry.

Henry replied with The Act of Supremacy. This made Henry the Head of the Catholic English Church, and was a break from the authority of the Pope in Rome, not from the Catholic Church: Henry was a strong Catholic.

After Henry had died, and under the influence of the Reformation thinkers (Martin Luther et al) the English Church began to amend what the reformers regarded as 'erroneous practises' that had crept into the Catholic faith. Thus the current Church of England describes itself as 'Catholic and Reformed'.

Henry didn't break away from the Catholic Church, he was simply refused communion by the pope, because he pointed out that the pope has very little authority within the Catholic Church! This is true; at no time was the Bishop of Rome given any authority other than what any other bishop or metropolitan has! Further the Great Councils stipulate, [Nice 6.] that one bishop cannot interfere in another bishop's see without permission. Rome sulked, he had no such authority until after the Council of Trent and that wasn't given by the Church, but by a sect!
