CORRECTION: There most certainly were Texans back then!!!! Texas was the 7th of the 11 states to secede from the Union. Texans did not like Lincoln. He opposed slavery, while Texans (along with many other southern states) felt slavery was necessary to sustain their economy, which depended heavily on farming and ranching. When Lincoln won the election, he received ZERO votes from Texas. His name was not even on the ballot.

The Texans felt like most if not all Confederate states about the draft. They believed it went against the right of states which was one of the main reasons for the southern states split from the Union in the first place! The new Confederate Constitution stated that a central government had no right to take away the rights of individual states and the people believed that by forcing them to go to war in a "draft" was unconstitutional!

Texas had fought a war with Mexico and won. They declared Texas to be an independent country. Texas later applied to become part of the United States. At first the United States said no because they knew Mexico would protest. But a wave of feelings called "Manifest Destiny" made Americans feel that American would get better if it grew bigger. James Knox Polk campaigned to make Texas part of the United States but it was done before Polk became president. Mexico did protest and the United States invaded Mexico. In addition to Texas, America took land for Arizona, California, and Nex Mexico.
