Best Answer

Native Americans veiw the land as a universal comman ground that cannot be owned or controlled by man. The land belongs to the Creator and is used by all creatures. When we die we must give back to the land and when we hunt we must thank the animal for giving its life and thank the Creator for providing the animal.

They viewed the land as a something a person could not own. It belonged unto itself. The privilege to use the land was handed down from their ancestors just as they were borrowing it from their descendants.

Property is/was not owned but to be taken care of. This was one of the major differences between the Native Americans and Europeans. When the Europeans landed in the Americas they saw a land with no fences, houses, kings, or ownership, so they began to make the land theirs by cutting trees, importing plants, and introducing insects not native to the environment. This changed the environment of the lands where they settled and making the life of Native Americans difficult. They lost lands, lifestyle, and their lives through the European invasion of North America.

Different tribes had different customs, but the concept of OWNING land was unknown to most. Having the right to USE land (hunting, fishing) was common.
