I was born in 1950 and we listened to music on the radio and with long playing records on a turntable. I was about 11 or 12 years old when the transistor radio came out. It wasn't very small, but it was pretty neat to carry around. One of the early ads had one that was pocket size and showed it in a pocket. TV, of course, had music and so did movies. Some of the biggest hits came from movies. In fact, you still hear these today. Last of all there were alive concerts just like we have today and clubs had alive performers. The DJ in a club is a fairly recent invention. Stereo systems also came out when I was in my teens and they used the turntable to play music. You could put 8-10 records on and they would cycle through until all had been played. There was no way to pick one song ( unless you bought a small one/two song record) to play. To do that you had to pick up the needle and place it on the groove where that song was located on the record.
