Due to deep-rooted Confucius influence, individuals among Chinese are often seen as part of a social organization, rather than an individual per se. A sense of collectivism -- in contrast to individualism -- is expected from everyone. This explains why certain behaviors -- such as the emphasis of guanxi (connections), mianzi (face) and ranks and titles -- are so prevalent among Chinese.
