When Papa Bear George Halas brought the Decatur Staley's to Chicago, he signed a contract to play at Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, since football players are bigger then Baseball players...he named them the Bears. The colors came from his Alma Mater, The University of Illinois.
Because George Halas was a Bear of a man.

The origins of the Atlanta Hawks can be traced to the establishment of the Buffalo Bisons in 1946, a member of the National Basketball League. After 13 games of their inaugural season, the team moved to Moline, Illinois and became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks in reference to the Black Hawk War that was mostly fought in Illinois. In 1949, they joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) as part of the National Basketball League and the Basketball Association of America merger. In 1951, the team moved to Milwaukee, where they changed their name to the Hawks. The team moved again in 1955 to St. Louis, where they won their only NBA Championship in 1958. The Hawks moved to Atlanta in 1968, where they have been ever since.

When George Halas and his partner Edward Sternaman moved the Staleys from Decatur to Chicago in 1921 they kept the name the Staleys due to an agreement with Mr. Chamberlain of the Staley Company for whom the Staleys had been a club team. In 1922 Halas and Sternaman wanted to name the team the Cubs out of thanks to Bill Veek, owner of the Chicago Cubs, for letting them play at Cubs Park for a reasonable cost but decided football players were larger than baseball players so they decided on the Bears instead.
