The First Great Awakening was not a cause of the Revolutionary War. Jonathan Edwards was an important leader in America. George Whitfield was involved in it in both England and America. John Wesley, Charles Wesley, William Cowper, and John Newton were important leaders in England. Ebenezer Erskine was an important Scottish leader. It was a protestant religious movement.

The Revolutionary War came about when King George III created new taxes and created a new revenue service with the authority to collect taxes, add fees to cover the cost of collection, and use secret courts (admiralty courts) to take care of necessary business. When that caused difficulty King George took the men in the jails and prisons of England, dressed them in British Army uniforms, and quartered them in the houses of American Colonists.
