If you are going by traditional, actual Greek mythology, the answer is complex. His wife was tricked by a jealous centaur into putting the centaur's blood on Hercules' cloak. This poisoned and nearly killed Hercules. But then Zeus (Hercules' father) took pity on his son and turned Hercules into a god (rather than a demigod, like Hercules was before).

Hercules had a wife. They were supposed to cross the bridge so Hercules decided to let a centaur carry her across. The centaur threatened to rape her and Hercules shot an arrow at him. The arrow caused the centaurs death but before he died he told Hercules's wife to mix his blood and sperm in the water. This created a love potion. Years later she heard that Hercules was dating another woman. She wanted to win him back so she got a rag and soaked in the water were the centaur died. What she didnt know was that before the centaur died he was wounded in the underworld. When she gave the Hercules the rag to wash off he couldn't get off. This gave him an unbearable pain. When he tried to pull it off his flesh ripped off a bit. He climed to mount Oeta and that is where he died.
