Best Answer

Early westward travelers made their way across the land seeking out the best and easiest routes. Others followed and marked the best or better routes down until at some point a cartographer put it all on a map for distribution.

The British said that if there were more British people in Oregon, then Oregon would be theirs, but if there were more American, then they would give Oregon Territory to the US. To encourage Americans to go on the Oregon Trail, the US government offered 640 acres of free, rich land. They also advertised that Oregon had great water, outstanding timber, and extraordinary climate. Some people wanted freedom and didn't like the idea of slavery, so they also moved. Other people wanted adventure, and some wanted a better life for their family. Others moved just because their family was there, and they wanted to be with their family. Some left to escape sickness. Another reason was that after the Civil War, many left to find new homes. Some of the emigrants went west because they wanted to practice their religion freely.
