US political involvement in South East Asia began at the onset of the 2oth century. The industrial revolution that swept the world made western (not yet including the US) colonial countries to hold on to the territories the occupy because industrial mass production made them compete for markets abroad.

The problem was that the world was already subdivided by European colonial countries. Much of Asia at that time was occupied by either the British, the Spanish, the Portuguese, the French, the Dutch, and the Germans. US still has none. The opportunity came at the decline of Spain and the incident called Spanish -American war. Spain ceded the territories it used to control to US after the war.

One of those territories was the Philippines. But the Filipinos were already fighting the Spanish and about to kick them home, entered Uncle Sam. A bitter Philippine - American war followed (not really much recorded in the American books). What followed was a 48 year direct Philippine colonization and American expansionism not only in South east Asia but the beginning of US hegemony in the world. That hegemony was consummated after WW-II
