Near the end of the first day of the Battle of Shiloh, Union forces were pinned with their backs to the Tennessee River. They managed to hold on and the battle was still undecided at that time. After the war PT Beauregard, who led the Confederates after Major General Albert S. Johnston was killed wrote about the battle. He reported the Union artillery commanded by Colonel J. D. Webster was the reason that the Confederates could not end the battle in victory on that first day.

The Union were not expecting a battle, and had no plan for one. The Confederate attack under Sidney Johnston nearly succeeded in pushing the whole Union army into the Tennessee River, but Johnston was killed and Union reinforcements arrived just in time.
They believed that there artillery had destroyed the unions artillery but in reality there artillery missed over there head.
That was Shiloh in Western Tennessee. Remember, the Confederate commanding General (killed in the battle) was Sidney Johnston, not the better-known Joseph E. Johnston - no relation - who later commanded the Army of Tennessee.
