Andrae, What caused us to enter into the Second World War on the side of the Allies?
The bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese made it clear we were at war. The Japanese were on the side of the"Axis Powers" so we automatically were on the side of the "Allies."
Actually there is more to it that just that. We had fought along with the English and French in World War I, and against the Germans. There was still bad feelings against the Germans left over from that war.
There was great sympathy for the British as we saw England being bombed. Then too our language, much of our culture, and some of our religions were from England. Another important contribution was the broadcast from Edward R.Morrow, who was in London broadcasting the events as they happened on the radio.
In 1940 there was a VERY strong movement in America against getting involved in another war. Pearl Harbor caused that movement to disappear in a day.
