First, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 on the Ricther scale. There was also a shift underneath the water. All the water above it was disturbed. All that water formed into a wave which gradually grew bigger. When it arrived, it washed out everything in it's path.

The earthquake was the moving of two plates that have been stressing for centuries, many miles away from Japan.

The tsunami was a result of the lifting of one plate in the ocean-it was giant.
