They didn't discover the Ukulele, they created it. It was based on an instrument that was native to their country. When they came to Hawaii, they made it with the materials they could find there and it became the ukulele.

You have it backwards. The ukulele came to Hawaii in the form of a Portuguese instrument, called the machete. It was brought by some immigrants that came from Madeira to work in the Sugar Cane fields. It evolved on the islands and has now spread throughout the world.

There are three individuals that began making ukuleles in 1880 in Hawaii. They all arrived in Hawaii on the same ship in August of 1879. Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias were cabinet makers from Madeira, an island belonging to Portugal and began making the instruments after the Hawaiian's showed such interest in the cavaquinho a small stringed instrument, that the immigrants had brought with them from their homeland.
