The North was mainly industrialized and heavily populated. The South was agricultural and had pockets of populated areas, but was mainly rural. The Southern states relied heavily on exporting cotton and other produce to Europe and, in order to make a profit on these exports, relied on slave labor. The North was also more in favor of the National government having more power than the states. While in the south people were more in fovor of states rights and power being greater than that of the national government.
One difference between the north and south economically was that the south was relying on agriculture to make money while the north was industrializing. The south needed slaves to work their fields so they could make money while the north had more manufacturing jobs.
