Europeans WANTED (for trade purposes NEEDED) certain material: Opium/Silk/Spices/and in the beginning, gunpowder from China; Rubber/Sea Ports from Vietnam; and in the case of Russia (before they became the Soviet Union), Russia needed an ICE-FREE seaport (this resulted in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904).

By moving into China, Korea, Vietnam, etc. and establishing trading posts...the next step is for their militaries to establish BASES in order to PROTECT those trading posts; there's your control.
