They lived a very simple life, as did most of ancient Egypt's population. The concept of 'unskilled' did not really exist at the time (it is an Industrial Revolution, so 19th century distinction): as a commoner in ancient Egypt, you were either an artisan or a farmer or farm hand, and as such you were in principle "skilled" in that work. Thanks to the twice-yearly Nile inundations of the nearby farm land, harvests were usually good and famine was rare. Egyptians as a rule ate frugally, and like many people living in subtropical climates even today, lived largely outside with their homes mostly a shelter for the night or for occasional bad weather.
A majority lived and worked on the pyramids. Historians have found their communities buried under the sands on the Gaza peninsula. They worked 9 day work weeks and they had quarters that was near to their work with their families.
