Van Gogh actually shot himself in the stomach, which is a horrible slow way to kill oneself. It is also theorized that some of Vincents mental problems were brought on or worsened by the fact that all of the paints he used contained lead which can pool in the brain, and he was known to taste all of his paints to ensure they were up to his standards.
