An aqueduct is a structure that carries water through Rome and Greece. It leads pipes to houses to sinks to water fountains and anything that has water coming out with a button.
Aqueducts were large water pipes which were used to transport water to where it was needed.

Originally a Roman invention, it was a water channel, built on arches where necessary to keep a constant gradient to promote even flow, to transport water from a water source and bring it to a town to be used for domestic purposes, bath houses, fountains, etc.
In the ancient Rome, people also had water just like us. The water was transported by huge structures of stone, brick and special volcanic cement, which held the water and brought it from the hills to the city. Rome had 11 major aqueducts, which supplied Rome for over 500 years. The Romans had built the first aqueduct in 312 B.C., and they called it Aqua Appia, while the last one was called Aqua Alexandrina, and it was built in 226 A.D. The aqueducts, together they could give well over one million cubic meters of water per day, and when the population was over a million, each inhabitant could get one cubic meter of water per day, which is more than what we usually use nowadays. All of the aqueducts were built between 312 B.C. and 226 A.D. Rome had 11 major aqueducts. The longest one was called Anio Novus (which means New Year), and it was 59 miles long. The aqueducts were built by slaves. They used stone, brick and special volcanic cement, making such strong structures that some still stand today. Most of the aqueducts were built underground, where it could take water from the water tables, where the water is cleaner than 'outside'. Only 30/260 miles were external aqueducts! Nobody is sure of who first invented the aqueducts, but as the first one began its construction in 312 B.C., it might have been Appius Claudius Caecus, because he was the one who ruled Rome at that time, but it could have been also a pauper that gave the idea or inspiration to start building aqueducts. An aqueduct is a small, artificial channel that is used for conveying water.

A (Roman) aqueduct was a large water supply system delivering water from a source to a town , a villa or an industrial site. The majority of aqueducts are designed based on the fact that water flows downhill. Whether they are open channels, underground pipes, or raised structures, like the most famous of the Roman aqueducts; they are designed to slope down gently from water source to water destination.

An aqueduct is a water pipe. To make one you basically put one end of the pipe in some water and force the water through either by gravity or the syphon method, which the Romans used, or by power pumps that are used today.

There were no aqueducts in the middle ages and no running water into houses. The Romans knew how to build aqueducts and to bring water into cities and provide running water to houses, but when Rome fell the knowledge went with them. Any aqueducts that existed soon fell apart and couldn't be repaired. One of the main problems in the middle ages was clean drinking water, but the knowledge wasn't there to provide water. Many people died of water born diseases as a result.

There were several ways medieval aqueducts work. One was simply building a conduit through which water could flow. Work on the water infrastructure of London began in 1247 with a conduit that ducted spring water into the center of the city. These aqueducts were not like those of ancient Rome, and were more like canals. Records of sickness and death in the later times in London show that some poor people were still using water from the Thames even after the water system was introduced, possibly to avoid taxes or other costs. But those people who could afford it had better water available.

Artesian wells were invented by Carthusian monks in Artois, France, in 1126. They were able to create a well providing water under pressure by driving an iron pipe into the ground. This water then could be conducted by pipe to where it was needed. Similar artesian wells were built in other parts of Europe. In places where it was possible to have artesian wells, they could supply manor houses or towns with all or part of the water needed.

Some Roman aqueducts continued to be used into the Middle Ages. The Pond du Gard seems to have been used to the 9th century. The aqueduct that connected the Pools of Solomon to Jersulam has been broken from Bethlehem on, but continues to deliver water to Bethlehem today. Many of these aqueducts were destroyed in wars, including those that supplied water to the city of Rome. The others were not well maintained well enough to keep them operating in subsequent centuries and got clogged with dirt and plant material or with lime encrustations as time passed.

Aqueducts brought water from the sources on the mountains to the towns. Water was channeled down the valleys by a system of siphons.

Water was channelled down steep valleys with a system of inverted siphons. The water conduits led to a tank which passed the water into pipes which took it lower down the valley. There they were supported by a low venter bridge which led them to another tank to discharge the water into it. This tank, in turn, fed the water into other pipes which then reached another tank, and so on. The tanks were at intervals of narrow differences in elevation in order to maintain a low gradient. A low gradient was used to prevent damage to the structure such as erosion or blow outs due to water pressure.

In flat areas the conduits were placed on bridgework to maintain a gradient to keep the water flowing. Bridges were also used to cross valleys or rivers. They had arches built in stone, brick or cement
