The south wanted the newly acquired land from Mexico to enter as slave states while the North wanted the land to be free states. This angered the South who depended on slave labor to grow cotton and other crops, The Compromise of 1850 which also angered the South made Carolina a free state and let other states choose whether they wanted to be free or slave states. The south saw they were loosing power and obviously did not like that.
