Westward migration in the United States intensified sectionalism. As more and more people headed west, the need of a faster way to travel grew. Farmers lost workers to the railways being built.

Expansion increased sectionalism by suddenly having to make the decision of slave states versus non slave states, since there had to be an equal number. it also expanded different rural responsibilities for the economy, and truthfully, it was only natural. Since the U.S was getting bigger, sectionalism was bound to increase.
