Wild mustangs were persecuted by ranchers for taking over grazing lands that were intended for their cattle. As a result, large numbers were rounded up and taken to the slaughter plant to be made into glue and dog food. Also, a lot of their habitat had been exploited and taken over by humans, driving them into smaller-sized isolated areas where they can only thrive from. Wild horses are almost like wolves: they thrive best where humans are not living or are commonly found. They prefer very isolated areas that are literally untouched by the encroachment of human civilization.

The only wild horses left in the world are the Pzewalski's Horse, which were almost driven to extinction several decades ago. The few remaining in the wild were rounded up and held until their numbers increased, then they were re-released near Mongolia.

The American Mustang is not a true 'wild' horse, but is ferel, meaning they were once domestic horses that were either released or escaped and began to breed in the wild. The Mustangs are no longer in danger of extinction and in fact are too plentiful due to the fact that many of America's large preditors such as the mountain lion, bear and wolves have been hunted to the brink of extinction. Without that natural check and balance of preditor and prey, there are far too many Mustangs according to the BLM (Bureau of Land Management).

Some horse breeds became endangered from lack of breeding for purebreds, others for large numbers being exported to other countries, and some for being hunted/killed by people.
