In Colonial Williamsburg at least, several taverns were owned and operated by widows. While a widow who owned a tavern would be considered a good marriage prospect, they mostly refused, as for once they were legally independent.

they where the backbone of the econymy... they ran busnesses, provided education, and where nerses. they also played a major part in the government
