Your engine was starved for fuel for some reason, in most cases it was the fault of dirty carbs or fuel. 2 cycle engines are designed to have extra fuel in the mixture that is used to keep the cylinder cool, which is around 1100-1200 degrees. If the extra fuel is not there, the temps will raise. Once the cylinder hits 1300 degrees the aluminum piston starts to melt, which will produce a hole under the spark plug (the hot spot), shutting the engine down.
