It’s not always easy to choose the right career path. With all of the possible occupations in the world, one might find it overwhelming and a bit of a challenge to make the proper career choice. That is why it is important to research an occupation before you pursue it. Fortunately, there are a few ways that you can research your career choices before you make that important decision.

Make a List of Your Choices

Take time to write down every possible career that interests you. You should also include on your list why you chose that particular career and why you feel that you are a good fit for that occupation.

Meet With a Counselor

A career or vocational counselor can assist you with the career exploration process. Counselors have the knowledge, skills and tools to help you narrow down your options, so you can choose the right career path. Career counselors generally work at colleges, universities, vocational rehabilitation centers, and state employments agencies.

Utilize Online Resources

There are a variety of websites that provide an abundance of information about careers. For instance, you can visit websites, such as the United States Department of Labor (Occupational Outlook Handbook, www.dol.gov), Careers.org, Monster.com, and CareerBuilder.com for helpful information about your career choices.

Network with People in that Field

It is a good idea to interview possible who are already employed (or previously employed) in those career fields. You can begin the networking process by speaking to family members, friends, colleagues and church members about your career interests. You should also attend job fairs or career events in your area (which can help you build a network of contacts). In addition, feel free to join professional organizations in your city that are related to your career choices. These types of organizations can benefit you and possibly open up doors to possible employment opportunities in the future.

Get Some Hands-On Experience

Consider applying for an internship, or volunteer at companies, businesses or organizations that interest you. Although you may not receive compensation for your hard work, you can definitely gain experience and develop new business contacts.

It may take a little time to thoroughly research all of your career choices. However, you should not rush the process at all. Take time to carefully review each occupation on your list and pay close attention to important factors, such as educational and training requirements, salary information, benefits and the career outlook for each occupation. In just a matter of time, you are bound to discover the right career path to pursue.
