How do I delete a corrupt file or directory in Microsoft Vista Windows OS?

If vista doesn't allow you to delete corruptes files (folders), you have to boot your PC up in Safe Mode. In Safe Mode with administrative rights you can delete any file (directory/folder) which you like to.
To boot your system up in Safe Mode if have to press F8 just right after BIOS finishes to test the system.

∙ 16y agoThe most foolproof way that comes to mind would be to boot a version of Knoppix from a CD or jump drive. Once Knoppix has loaded, mount the drive with the corrupt files or directories and delete! This works 9/10 times. Knoppix can be downloaded for free, just do a little search. It's a relatively large file, so it's not necessarily convenient for dial-up users.

∙ 8y agoThis depends on the situation. Normally, you can just find the files in question, select them, and then press the Delete key, or hold down the Shift key while pressing Delete to permanently delete them.
If the file is a system file, then it gets tricky, since you might not be allowed to delete it. You might need to install a program such as Unlocker to get the system to let you have access to it.
If you find corrupted files, then you would want to check and repair the filesystem. For instance, if you cannot delete corrupt files, that could be a symptom of serious filesystem errors. You should also try to locate your hard drive manufacturer's test utility. Some have a utility you can burn to a CD and boot the computer with to let you test deep aspects of the drive and do surface analysis. Corrupt files are sometimes a symptom of pending hard drive failure.
