There are 300,000 Navajo and the Navajo Nation is 27,000 square miles, so there is a lot of diversity in how people make a living. About two thirds of the tribal members live on the Navajo Nation and most of the rest live in the nearby States. Some work traditional jobs of raising sheep and crops, making jewelery, weaving rugs or other crafts. About 60% of the families have at least one member who makes money through Arts and Crafts. Some people work away from the tribal lands all or part of the year. Many are in the military. In the past, seasonal farm labor was done in Colorado and California. The unemployment rate hovers around 40-45% but some communities have a much higher one and some much lower. Per capita income is very low, about $7000 at last report and family income about $22,000. About 20% of homes have no electricity or running water. About half have no phone. However, traditional belief says that wealth is having many relative, much ritual knowledge, your own home, and much livestock.

The largest employers are various government jobs, health care education and mining. Attached is a list of the largest employers.

There are 12 tribally runs businesses including the largest irrigated farm in the US. There is : Navajo tribal utilities, Navajo Agricultural Products Industry , Navajo Arts & Crafts Enterprise, Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise, KTNN Radio Station ,Dine' Power Authority , Navajo Nation Oil & Gas Company, Inc. , Navajo Nation Shopping Centers , The Navajo Times, Navajo Transit System , Navajo Engineering & Construction Authority , and the Navajo Housing Authority.

They have a coal, oil and gas royalties. Coal royalties account for 32% of the annual budget. They are building a 500 megawatt wind farm. They may purchase the power plant near Page AZ. Utah Dineh Corporation is a non profit that deals with the oil revenue generated in the Utah part of the Nation.

There has long been traditional Navajo religious and cultural dislike of the idea of casinos but they have in recent years opened 4 casino gaming facilities on or near tribal land.

I have attached the Navajo President's State of the Nation for 2013 and the Council Speaker's 2014 report

Is the Navajo the tribe of hunters?

Not an easy question to answer. It depends on when you are speaking of the Navajo or which faction of Navajo you are speaking of. Today they are farmers and herders. There are Navajo hunters who are very good at hunting, with specific rituals and practices for when they hunt. Nor is it for sport, they hunt to eat not for trophies. Everything they do is with purpose and with a need to maintain balance and harmony with ones self and the community. They take only what they need from the land, and attempt to give back what they take. Thus maintaining balance with themselves and the land. They are hunters, but they are also gatherers, farmers and herders. Today they are construction workers, teachers, lawyers, doctors, mechanics and what ever you would find in any person that must survive in today's society. But they are still Dineh
