Best Answer

they can lay down as long as they want but it takes more energy to lay down then to stand up. Don't get scared if they look dead or sick more than likely there just resting.

standing up or laying down. all horses get about 8 hours of sleep a day and each time a horse falls asleep it will wake up within 10-30 minutes.

^ Horses can sleep both standing up and lying down. They are able to doze and enter light sleep while standing. Horses are able to sleep standing up because a "stay apparatus" in their legs allows them to relax their muscles and doze without collapsing. Horses do not need a solid, unbroken period of sleep time. They obtain needed sleep by means of many short periods of rest. Horses require approximately two and a half hours of sleep, on average, in a 24-hour period. Most of this sleep occurs in many short intervals of about 15 minutes each.
Horses will doze standing up, but for some deep sleep for a couple of hours, they will lay down recumbent on their chests or lay out flat on their sides.

Horse's sleep requirements are much different than humans. Horses can doze standing up and spend an hour or two each day with 'on the ground sleep'. But if they are completely deprived of sleep they would start to feel the effects after 2 or 3 days. Of course, the longer the time without sleep, the worse the effects will be. One study done in the 1950's a man was deprived of sleep for months. It seriously impaired him mentally. Once he was allowed to sleep again he remained impaired for the rest of his life. They did no more sleep studies of the sort.

Adult horses sleep for about four hours a day on average. However, they do not sleep for long periods of time like humans. They take a number of shorts naps which add up to about four hours.

Is is dangerous for a horse to lay on its side for a long time?

this depends on what your definition is of a 'long time'. Horses must sleep laying down to get full REM sleep, but this only lasts for a few minutes. Some horses also like to lay on their sides in the sun to rest. However if a horse has been down for an hour or more, or is extremely still while laying down it would be best to check the horse and call a equine veterinarian.
