First off the air governor controls the air compressor the air compessor pulls in the air from outside and compresses it into very small amounts hense compressor, the air then travels though the air lines where it will go though the air dryer this will remove some not all of the moisture that is in the air. The air continues though the air lines into the air storage tanks where it is stored until needed. If you are driving a tractor trailer DO NOT put the vehicle into motion until 125 psi has build up in the air system and you yourself have made sure their are no defects in the braking system. Dont rely on anybody to do this for you. Its a safety reason. Now that you know how air is brought in let me tell you how the air is used. Whenyou push on the foot valve, treadle valve, or in ordinary terms brake pedal that release valve is opened in the air tank this allows air to escape the tank and travel though the air lines to the braking mechanism. When there the air will push against the slack adjuster twisting the camshaft unit which in turn will twist an S-cam (looks like the letter s) this between 2 brake rollers will move the brake shoes into contact with the brake drum ths creates friction and bring the vehicle to a stop. Also, the governor will control the compressor at 100 psi. But, sometimes this can fail if your compressor or governor stops working it means air cannot be pulled into the system but don't worry you are still safe if used properly the air tanks will hold enough air for a few more application. DO NOT try to finsh your route on just the air supply left. Or, a leak ight occur in the air lines don't worry you are still safe for now the emergency air release valve will close keeping the air in the tank. Again, DO NOT operate your vehicle in this situation. Another reason for failure is the glad hands red emergency, blue service, and green electrical could become diconnected from the tractor unit don't worry yet you are still safe. The tractor prtection valve will shut enableing no air to leave though the glad hand openings. The most common reason people lose their brakes wheather it be air or hydraulic is very simply lack of knowledge and carelessness. They can hear the metal on metal when they drive down the road but they don't care. So don't believe what all those democrat lawyers say because 18 wheelers are not the most dangerous vehicles on the road. An uneducated driver who does not understand their vehicle is the most dangerous driver on the road. Along with people that don't come to compplete stops at stop signs or right turn red lights, don't signal, speed, brake to late.
