There are three parts to an airbag system. There is the bag which is made of nylon and folded into the dash or steering wheel, a sensor that detects a collision force, and the inflation system. When the sensor triggers the system, sodium azide and potassium nitrate combine and almost instantaneously create a large volume of nitrogen gas which inflates the bag in less than 1/10 of a second.
