Primarily they throttle back to reduce thrust.

But they also usually will use the flaps, lowering the landing gear also increases drag reducing speed, and most large aircraft also have air brakes (spoilers) for reducing speed.

Small aircraft may also perform a "forward slip" maneuver. This is where the pilot will use opposite rudder & ailerons to make the aircraft fly a little side-ways. This increases the frontal area of the plane increasing drag & reducing speed.
