Cerebral palsy can be caused by an abnormality in brain development, this usually happens before a child is born. But it also can be caused by injuries during or after birth due to medical mistakes in which case a cerebral palsy attorney can obtain financial compensation.

The cause of cerebral palsy in babies is damage to the cerebrum. Some babies suffer oxygen deprivation during labor and delivery and doctors used to think that was the cause of the brain damage but later research has shown that most cases of damage to the brain among cerebral palsy children occured before they were born. In particular this damage was caused during the first six months of pregnancy with reasons such as periventricular leukomalacia, abnormal development of the brain and intracranial hemorrhage.
