All depends on the bird. A lot of birds build their nests with branches, leaves, feathers, and occasionally pieces of trash lying around. Most use sticks for the structure and the use feathers and leaves for bedding. When I said trash, I meant pieces of strong yarn, anything soft.
They find a good spot on a tree, and they take one twig at a time, and eventually, they take all of the twigs to one spot from tons of different trees to make a nest. They also take pieces material, cardboard, paper, anything they think will keep them warm and shield them from wind.
