Some types of birds, such as robins, can hear it. They also watch for movement in the dirt but their hearing is very acute. Other types of birds use their sense of sight, smell, or touch to find worms.

Worms come to the surface of the ground when birds peck at the ground because the sound that bird's beaks make when hitting the ground irritates the worms, so they come up to see what is causing the noise. From there, the birds are able to snatch the worm and eat it.

They hop all over the area and a worm if near will think the hopping vibrations are rain drops, if the worm happens to be close to the surface the robin will either see some movement or sense it with their feet.
