The black widow males sre the ony ones that have an ourglass on their abdomen and the bright redness is what attracts the female.
That statement is incorrect. The female has the hourglass on her belly and is larger than the male. The male has red and yello and white on it back.
___________
[edit] The attraction has NOTHING to do with colors. Black Widow Spiders are cobweb weavers that use their web as their "vision"... listening and feeling for vibrations through it. They have VERY poor vision. Attraction is via pheromones. Once the male "sniffs" out a female, he enters the web and does a tap dance on the silk lines and vibrates his body parts to "speak" to the female and let her know he is a male of her species and not prey. Attraction and mating in this kind of spider, again, has nothing to do with vision.
By the way, both males and females have the hourglass on their underside. The previous person was correct that the female is larger than the male and that the male has some colorful markings. Immature females also have colorful markings. Black Widows are born nearly all white and gradually gain their dark color as they age.
Black widow spiders are known for an identifying red hour-glass spot on their abdomens. With a few weapons in its arsenal, the black widow spider is able to take down its prey with a potent poison giving the final death blow. First however, the black widow spider must be able to somehow catch its prey. Unlike the wolf spider, which chases its prey down, the black widow spider finds other ways to get food. Instead of running after its prey, the black widow sets a sticky trap to ensnare its food. Using its spinnerets, a black widow makes a web to capture prey that may fly into or somehow get stuck within it.
