Well, young male dogs usually find a place, stand, lean forward a little bit (urine falls on the ground) until they have finished emptying their bladder. As male dogs become older, after one years old about, they still lean forward a little but start to lift one hind leg. If you take them for a walk they will mark many things in their pathway. Sometimes it's a little comical.

∙ 14y agoIt depends on which gender you`re talking about, if you mean a boy dog, it lifts it`s leg and allows pee to run through it`s penis.If you mean a girl dog, it squats down and allows pee to run through it`s vagina.

∙ 14y agoIt's a bit like girls peeing standing up - they can, but it's not usual. Male dogs will often cock a leg partly to stop peeing all over themselves and partly to make a high mark on something. Female dogs can't usually aim as high as male dogs, so when marking, a female dog will pee sitting down. (Sometimes a talented female dog will mark like a male if she can get high enough!) However, if she just needs to pee kinda badly, she'll cock her leg like a boy and pee with her leg up to avoid splashing herself. Ahhh! I wonder if relief feels as wonderful for dogs, huh? ^_^

∙ 9y agoFemale dogs do not spray. If your female dog is marking like a male dog, it may have a urinary tract or bladder infection. A spraying female dog should be examined by a veterinarian.

Im sure you mean why do boy dogs lift a leg and girl dogs don't. Well, the answer would be because if boy dogs tried to "go" without lifting their leg up they would just end up peeing on their leg. and somehow they know that they dont want that.
