Spawning occurs mostly in rivers and streams in the spring and early summer when waters warm to 70 to 85 degrees. They also will spawn in larger lakes where suitable habitat is available. Eggs are deposited in nests secluded under banks or logs or over open bottom. The male selects the site, often a natural cavern or hole, clears the nest and guards the eggs and young. A female may lay 2,000 to 21,000 eggs that hatch in six to 10 days depending on water temperature. Males protect the fry until they leave the nest in about a week.
Catfishes usually mate in marshy habitats followed by the female laying eggs in secure nests, which is sperminated by the male.He will protect them until they hatch - an example of parental care shown by the male counterpart.
Before male and female copulates with each other, female choose right place to breed their babies. Basically, female will choose hiding places to hatch their babies, this could be inside a dead shell or small pores of rocks.
When both male and female are ready, new fries are born (catfish never lay eggs). Before the fires are adult and have a capability to fight against their predators, they never leave their home (they stay inside the shell with their mom). Foods are provided by female catfish.
Finally, when fries are adult they leave their home start living as a normal life.
If you state which specific species of catfish, I may be able to give more info. Like all other species of fish, catfish will only breed when all the conditions that trigger its specific breeding instincts to come into play are present. These conditions can include some, all or many of the following. The correct pH, GH, Temp., water flow, flooding, daylength, oxygen content, type of substrate, plantlife, food availability and many many other factors too numerous to include here.
Catfish mate in the springtime, in warm water. The type of insemination that is most common tends to be internal. The male catfish may place his sperm in the oral cavity of the female catfish, and she may also allow the sperm to pass into her digestive system. Catfish do not leave their eggs, they take care of them.
